Susan Vesely, born 1953 in Birmingham, feels as though, from the time she was capable of thought, she knew she was an artist.  She recalls her first memory, the colour of the evening sky over her pram. Her next memory is the orange and yellow of a baked bean poster seen close up from the top of a bus.

Her father was a Czechoslovakian Jesuit, her mother a nurse from Yorkshire. The couple settled in Birmingham after the war. They were a poor family so Vesely had to improvise regarding her compulsion to draw, sketching on the fly leaf of every book the family owned.

When she went to school at the age of four she was put in charge of drawing and the other children coloured in her outlines. There was often a queue by her desk for drawings to go with the stories the other children were writing. Eventually, she was allowed out of her classes to paint on her own, "All this made me think I already had a role in life.  I was right."

Vesely studied for her BA in Fine Art in Birmingham, following on with her post graduate studies at the Royal College of Art, London. She is now an experienced lecturer in her own right but modestly considers that the art world is better off when she stays in her studio and paints!

An extremely well-established and sought-after Artist, Vesely has shown work in England, Norway & America, including the Royal Academy, since the 1970's and has work in many public & private collections worldwide.
